Jonah

Jonah opens with “Down to Joppa, Down to the Ship” and carries its history toward “Doest Thou Well to Be Angry.” A prophet is sent east to a city famous for cruelty and immediately buys passage west. Jonah is furious, and explains that this is exactly why he ran: I knew that thou art a gracious God, slow to anger and of great kindness.

    Jonah 1

Down to Joppa, Down to the Ship

A prophet is sent east to a city famous for cruelty and immediately buys passage west. The storm is aimed at him, and while pagan sailors row and pray to everything they can think of, he is asleep below deck. When the lot falls on him he tells them to throw him overboard, which they try hard not to do, and when they finally do the sea goes calm and the sailors start making vows.

    Jonah 2

Out of the Belly of Hell Cried I

The second chapter is a psalm rather than a narrative, and it is stitched together out of other psalms, the kind of thing a man remembers rather than composes. Weeds wrapped about his head, the bars of the earth closed behind him. Salvation is of the LORD. He is delivered before he has said one word about Nineveh, and he never does say one.

    Yet Forty Days

The word comes a second time and this time he goes. His sermon is eight words long and mentions no mercy, no invitation and no name for God. The entire city believes it anyway, from the king downward, and puts sackcloth on the livestock. God sees what they do, and does not do what he said he would.

Doest Thou Well to Be Angry

Jonah is furious, and explains that this is exactly why he ran: I knew that thou art a gracious God, slow to anger and of great kindness. He sits down east of the city to watch, hoping. A plant grows over him and he is glad of it, a worm kills it and he wants to die, and God’s last word is a question about a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and also much cattle.
