Micah

Micah opens with “The Mountains Melt Under Him” and carries its history toward “Who Is a God Like unto Thee.” A country prophet from a border town watches the Assyrian advance coming up the valley and names the towns it will take in a run of grim wordplay on their names. The good man is perished out of the earth, a son dishonours his father, and a man’s enemies are the men of his own house, so trust nobody, not even the wife lying in your arms.

    Micah 1–2

    The Mountains Melt Under Him

A country prophet from a border town watches the Assyrian advance coming up the valley and names the towns it will take in a run of grim wordplay on their names. He goes about stripped and howling like a jackal. The charge is specific: they covet fields and take them, they put women out of their pleasant houses, and what they want is a preacher who will prophesy about wine and strong drink.

They Build Up Zion with Blood

Rulers who hate the good and tear the skin off my people, prophets who cry peace while they are being fed and declare war on anyone who does not fill their mouths, priests who teach for hire, and every one of them leaning on the LORD and saying no evil can come upon us. Zion shall be plowed as a field. And then immediately the mountain of the LORD’s house established, swords beaten into plowshares, and every man under his own vine.

    Micah 5–6

    But Thou, Bethlehem

Out of the smallest town in Judah comes the one who will rule, whose goings forth have been from of old. Then God takes Israel to court with the hills as jury and asks what he has done to weary them. What should be brought back, thousands of rams, ten thousand rivers of oil, a firstborn child? He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good: to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.

Who Is a God Like unto Thee

The good man is perished out of the earth, a son dishonours his father, and a man’s enemies are the men of his own house, so trust nobody, not even the wife lying in your arms. Therefore I will look unto the LORD. And then an ending that is a question about God rather than about the nation: who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and casteth all their sins into the depths of the sea.
