Nahum

Nahum opens with “Slow to Anger, and Great in Power” and carries its history toward “Thy Shepherds Slumber.” The book opens by insisting on two things at once about the same God. Your strongholds are fig trees with ripe fruit that falls into the mouth of anyone who shakes them.

    Nahum 1

Slow to Anger, and Great in Power

The book opens by insisting on two things at once about the same God. He is jealous and takes vengeance, and he is slow to anger and a stronghold in the day of trouble who knows the ones that trust in him. A hundred years after Jonah, the city that repented has gone back to what it was, and the feet of him that brings good tidings are on the mountains because the wicked one is cut off.

The Chariots Rage in the Streets

The siege is written as if watched from a rooftop. Shields dyed red, chariots with flaming torches jostling in the broad ways, the river gates opened and the palace dissolved. The queen is led away and her maids moan like doves. Where is the dwelling of the lions, asks a prophet whose country had lived under Assyrian lions for a hundred years.

    Nahum 3:1–11

    Woe to the Bloody City

The charge is not that Nineveh was strong but what it did with being strong: a city full of lies and robbery, selling nations. He asks whether she is any better than No Amon, the Egyptian city Assyria itself had sacked, whose children were dashed in pieces at the top of every street. She went into captivity, and so will you.

    Nahum 3:12–19

    Thy Shepherds Slumber

Your strongholds are fig trees with ripe fruit that falls into the mouth of anyone who shakes them. Draw the water for the siege, strengthen the brick kiln, and none of it will matter. Your merchants multiplied like locusts and flew away when the sun came up. The book ends by noting that everyone who hears the news will clap, because there was nobody your cruelty had not reached.
