Habakkuk

Habakkuk opens with “How Long Shall I Cry” and carries its history toward “Although the Fig Tree Shall Not Blossom.” This prophet does not address the nation. He says his belly trembled, his lips quivered at the voice, and rottenness entered into his bones, which is what fear actually feels like from inside.

    How Long Shall I Cry

This prophet does not address the nation. He addresses God, and he is complaining. How long shall I cry and thou wilt not hear? Violence, strife, and a law that is slacked. The answer he gets is worse than the silence was: I am raising up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation. So the second complaint is the harder one. Why would a holy God use somebody worse to punish somebody bad?

The Just Shall Live by His Faith

He says he will stand upon his watch and see what God answers him, which is the best line in Scripture about how to wait. The answer is to write it plainly enough that a man running past can read it. The vision is for an appointed time, and the just shall live by his faith. Then five woes on the plunderer, and the promise that the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

    God Came from Teman

The last chapter is a psalm with musical directions attached, and it is a deliberate act of memory. He recites what God did at the sea and among the mountains, in language of pestilence going before him and burning coals at his feet. It is not an argument. It is a frightened man reminding himself out loud of things he never personally saw.

Although the Fig Tree Shall Not Blossom

He says his belly trembled, his lips quivered at the voice, and rottenness entered into his bones, which is what fear actually feels like from inside. And then the conclusion the whole book was built to reach: although the fig tree shall not blossom and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD. He will make my feet like hinds’ feet.
