Zephaniah

Zephaniah opens with “I Will Utterly Consume All Things” and carries its history toward “He Will Joy over Thee with Singing.” The opening is the bleakest in the prophets: I will consume man and beast, the fowls of the heaven and the fishes of the sea. The last five verses reverse everything, and are one of the few places in Scripture where God himself is described as singing.

I Will Utterly Consume All Things

The opening is the bleakest in the prophets: I will consume man and beast, the fowls of the heaven and the fishes of the sea. The target is a nation hedging its bets, those who swear by the LORD and by Malcham at the same time, and those who say in their hearts that the LORD will do neither good nor evil. The great day of the LORD is near, a day of wasteness, a day of the trumpet and alarm.

Seek Ye the LORD, All Ye Meek

Before the decree brings forth, gather yourselves together, seek righteousness, seek meekness, and it may be you shall be hid in the day of the LORD’s anger. Then the nations: Philistia emptied, Moab left like Sodom, Ethiopia slain, and Nineveh made so dry that the cormorant and the bittern lodge in her carved lintels and every passer by hisses and shakes his hand.

Her Prophets Are Light and Treacherous

The city that trusted nobody and drew near to nobody is described from inside. Princes who are roaring lions, judges who are evening wolves leaving nothing until the morning, prophets who are frivolous. Yet the just LORD is in the midst of her, and he brings his judgment to light every morning, and he does not fail. Then a promise to leave behind an afflicted and poor people who will trust in the name of the LORD.

He Will Joy over Thee with Singing

The last five verses reverse everything, and are one of the few places in Scripture where God himself is described as singing. Sing, O daughter of Zion, the LORD hath taken away thy judgments. He will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. I will gather them that are driven out, I will save her that halteth, and I will get you praise and fame in every land where you were put to shame.
