[Descending Verse]
The word said Nineveh.
Jonah chose Tarshish.
Down to Joppa,
Down in the ship,
Down in the sides
While the great tempest thundered,
Down beneath lots
When the secret was numbered.
[Chorus]
Down to the deep,
Where the mountains closed round him,
Seaweed like cords
And the floods all around him.
Down to the deep,
Yet prayer found a way;
The Lord heard Jonah
From the belly of the grave.
[Verse 2]
Sailors threw cargo and cried to their gods;
Jonah confessed why the sea struck the rods.
"Take me and cast me," the fugitive said.
They rowed toward land, but the storm only spread.
They prayed for mercy, then lifted him over;
The sea became quiet, and fear filled the crew.
[Prayer Bridge]
Waters compassed even to the soul.
The earth with her bars seemed forever made whole.
Yet from corruption his life was brought near;
He remembered the Lord, and the temple grew clear.
[Final Chorus]
Up from the deep
At the word of the Maker,
A great fish delivered
The reluctant lawbreaker.
Salvation belongs to the Lord, Jonah knew;
The shore received the prophet the great fish threw.
