I Have Loved You, and You Say Wherein (Malachi 1). The last book of the Old Testament is a series of arguments, and each one has the same shape: God states something, the people answer with a question, and God produces the evidence. It opens with love and is challenged immediately. Then the offerings. You bring the blind, the lame and the sick to the altar. Offer it now to your governor, and see whether he is pleased with you.

The Sun of Righteousness (Malachi 4). The day comes burning as an oven, and for those who fear his name the Sun of righteousness rises with healing in his wings, and they go out and grow up like calves of the stall. Remember the law of Moses. Then the last words of the Old Testament promise Elijah before the great and dreadful day, to turn the heart of the fathers to the children and the children to the fathers. After that, four hundred years of silence.
