Malachi

Malachi opens with “I Have Loved You, and You Say Wherein” and carries its history toward “The Sun of Righteousness.” The last book of the Old Testament is a series of arguments, and each one has the same shape: God states something, the people answer with a question, and God produces the evidence. The day comes burning as an oven, and for those who fear his name the Sun of righteousness rises with healing in his wings, and they go out and grow up like calves of the stall.

I Have Loved You, and You Say Wherein

The last book of the Old Testament is a series of arguments, and each one has the same shape: God states something, the people answer with a question, and God produces the evidence. It opens with love and is challenged immediately. Then the offerings. You bring the blind, the lame and the sick to the altar. Offer it now to your governor, and see whether he is pleased with you.

The Priests Have Departed Out of the Way

The priests are reminded that the covenant of Levi was one of life and peace, that a priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and that they have caused many to stumble at the law. Then the harder charge: you cover the altar with tears because your offerings are ignored, and the reason is the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously. The LORD hateth putting away.

    Will a Man Rob God

A messenger will prepare the way, and the Lord will come suddenly to his temple and sit as a refiner and purifier of silver. Bring the whole tithe, God says, and prove me now herewith, which is the one place in Scripture where that invitation is made. Your words have been stout against me: you have said it is vain to serve God. And a book of remembrance is written for the ones who feared him anyway and spoke to each other about it.

    The Sun of Righteousness

The day comes burning as an oven, and for those who fear his name the Sun of righteousness rises with healing in his wings, and they go out and grow up like calves of the stall. Remember the law of Moses. Then the last words of the Old Testament promise Elijah before the great and dreadful day, to turn the heart of the fathers to the children and the children to the fathers. After that, four hundred years of silence.
