A Census and a Cloud (Numbers 1–10). The people are counted, then camped tribe by tribe in a square around the tent, with the Levites between the people and the holy things. Aaron is given words to say over them: the LORD bless thee and keep thee. When the cloud lifts they march, and when it settles they stay, for a night or for a year.
Borders Drawn on a Land Not Entered (Numbers 31–36). Two and a half tribes ask to stay on the near side of the Jordan and are made to cross and fight first anyway. The borders are described, cities of refuge are set apart for the man who kills without meaning to, and the daughters marry inside their tribe so the land stays where it was given.
