Deuteronomy opens with “Forty Years, Retold at the Border” and carries its history toward “A Song, a Blessing, and a Grave No One Finds.” Moses stands east of the Jordan and tells the history back to a crowd that was made up of children when most of it happened. Moses writes a song and teaches it to the nation so it will be remembered when he is gone, blesses the tribes one by one, then climbs Nebo and is shown the whole land he will not enter.
