You Would Not Go Up

Deuteronomy 1:1-46

[Verse 1] Moses faced the nation on the eastern side of Jordan, And opened all the road behind them like a book before the people. Horeb had said move forward, leaders shared the weight of judgment, Then the terrible great wilderness brought Israel to Kadesh. [Pre-Chorus] Twelve men carried fruit from Eshcol, But fear returned with walls and Anak's sons. [Chorus] You would not go up when the land stood near, You made the promise smaller than the cities and the fear. The God who carried Israel like a father bore a son, Was rejected at the border, and the generation turned. [Verse 2] Caleb trusted wholly, Joshua was named to lead, The children feared as victims would inherit what was seen. Then regret put on its armor after God had said withdraw, But the ark did not go with them and the Amorites came down. [Bridge] Like bees they chased the army back from mountain to the plain, Tears at Kadesh could not reverse the oath that had been made. Moses told the story so the children at the river Would not turn a second time when God commanded them to enter. [Final Chorus] You would not go up when the land stood near, You made the promise smaller than the cities and the fear. The God who walked before you through the fire and the cloud, Would give the land to children when the fathers were not found. [Outro] The border held their failure, And the next generation listened.
