Moses is dead and the order is to get up and go over. Two spies end up hidden under flax on a roof in Jericho by Rahab, who bargains for her whole family and hangs a scarlet cord out the window. The river stands up in a heap, twelve stones are carried out of the riverbed, and a man with a drawn sword tells Joshua to take off his shoes.

Jericho falls to trumpets and a shout, and then Ai is lost because one man buried a robe and silver under his tent. The second attempt works, and the law is read aloud to everyone from two hillsides with the ark standing between them.

The Gibeonites turn up in patched sandals with mouldy bread, win a treaty by lying, and Joshua keeps it anyway. Five kings come against them for it, hail kills more of them than the sword does, and the sun stands still over Gibeon while the fighting finishes.
