[Verse 1]
Joshua gathered every tribe
At Shechem's ancient stone.
He told of fathers past the river,
Of Abraham called alone.
He spoke of Egypt, sea, and wilderness,
Of kingdoms swept away;
Not by Israel's sword or bow,
But by the Lord that day.
[Chorus]
Choose this day whom you will serve,
The gods beyond the river,
The gods within the land you hold,
Or Israel's great Deliverer.
Put away the stranger gods;
Let every idol fall.
As for me and my house,
We will serve the Lord through all.
[Verse 2]
The people answered, "God forbid
That we should turn aside.
He brought us from the house of slaves
And kept us on the ride."
Joshua warned a holy God
Would search the hidden part.
They pledged again; he wrote the words
And set a witness mark.
[Witness Refrain]
This stone has heard the covenant.
This stone has heard the vow.
Let it stand against denial
In the days that follow now.
[Final Chorus]
Choose this day whom you will serve;
No borrowed faith can answer.
Put away the stranger gods
That spread like hidden cancer.
Joshua died in promised soil,
His charge outlived his breath:
As for me and my house,
We will serve the Lord till death.
