Judges

Judges opens with “The Conquest Stalls” and carries its history toward “No King in Israel.” Tribe after tribe fails to drive out the people already in the land, and an angel tells them what is left behind will be thorns in their sides. A man sets up his own shrine and hires a Levite as a private priest; a whole tribe steals both on its way north.

    Judges 1–3

    The Conquest Stalls

Tribe after tribe fails to drive out the people already in the land, and an angel tells them what is left behind will be thorns in their sides. A pattern begins that the book repeats to exhaustion: the people forget, an oppressor arrives, they cry out, a deliverer rises, and the peace lasts exactly as long as he does.

Three Hundred Men and Some Broken Pitchers

Gideon threshes wheat in a winepress to hide it and is greeted as a mighty man of valour. He asks for a sign twice with a fleece, then watches his army cut from thirty two thousand to three hundred, who win with trumpets, torches and empty jars.

Jephthah makes a promise about whatever comes out of his door and his daughter comes out of it. Then Samson kills a lion, poses a riddle at his own wedding, loses his strength to a haircut, and pulls a temple down on himself and everyone in it.

    No King in Israel

A man sets up his own shrine and hires a Levite as a private priest; a whole tribe steals both on its way north. A Levite’s concubine is abused to death in Gibeah, the nation almost wipes Benjamin off the map, and then invents a way to find the survivors wives. The book closes with the line it has been building toward: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
