The Bramble Took the Crown

Judges 8:1-9:57

[Verse 1] Gideon crossed the Jordan weary and punished towns that would not feed, Captured kings, refused a throne, then fashioned gold into a snare. Forty years of rest grew quiet; after death the people turned, And the house that once delivered them became the house the bramble burned. [Pre-Chorus] Olive, fig, and vine said no, Then the thorn bush claimed the crown. [Chorus] The bramble took the crown, And fire traveled through the trees. Blood was poured on one cold stone, Till Shechem paid for what it chose. No throne built out of murder stands, The curse returns upon the hands. [Verse 2] Abimelech bought men with silver, seventy brothers faced the blade, Only Jotham lived to climb Gerizim and speak the parable. Shechem crowned the son of violence, then division split the town, Gaal boasted, Zebul whispered, and the city walls came down. [Bridge] Salt lay white across the ruins, tower smoke climbed through the air, At Thebez one woman lifted up a millstone from above. Crushed beneath the final judgment, Abimelech called for steel, So the evil done to Jerubbaal's sons returned upon the guilty field. [Final Chorus] The bramble took the crown, And fire traveled through the trees. Blood was poured on one cold stone, Till Shechem paid for what it chose. No throne built out of murder stands, The curse returns upon the hands. [Outro] The thorn promised shelter, Then burned the ones beneath it.
