Titus

Titus opens with “For This Cause Left I Thee in Crete” and carries its history toward “Avoid Foolish Questions.” Titus is on an island with a bad reputation and no organisation, and his brief is to set in order the things that are wanting and ordain elders in every city. Avoid foolish questions, genealogies, contentions and strivings about the law, for they are unprofitable and vain.

    Titus 1

For This Cause Left I Thee in Crete

Titus is on an island with a bad reputation and no organisation, and his brief is to set in order the things that are wanting and ordain elders in every city. The qualifications match Timothy’s and the local problem does not: talkers and deceivers who subvert whole houses for the sake of dishonest gain. Paul quotes a Cretan poet against the Cretans, and remarks that the witness is true.

Speak the Things Which Become Sound Doctrine

Instructions group by group, and every group gets something hard. Older men sober and patient, older women teachers of good things rather than false accusers, young women loving their husbands and children, young men sober minded, servants not answering back or pilfering, adorning the doctrine of God in all things. The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, and it teaches.

    Titus 3:1–8

    Not by Works of Righteousness

Be subject to authorities, speak evil of no man, be gentle, showing all meekness unto all men, for we ourselves were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived and hateful. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration.

    Titus 3:9–15

    Avoid Foolish Questions

Avoid foolish questions, genealogies, contentions and strivings about the law, for they are unprofitable and vain. A man that is an heretick, after the first and second admonition, reject. Then the ordinary end of a letter: send Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey and see that nothing is lacking, and let our people learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.
