2 Timothy

2 Timothy opens with “Stir Up the Gift” and carries its history toward “I Have Finished My Course.” His last letter, from a cold cell, to the person he trusts most. Preach the word, be instant in season and out of season, for the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine.

    2 Timothy 1

    Stir Up the Gift

His last letter, from a cold cell, to the person he trusts most. He remembers the faith that lived first in Timothy’s grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. He notes without bitterness that everyone in Asia has turned away from him, and then thanks God for Onesiphorus, who searched Rome until he found him and was not ashamed of the chain.

A Workman That Needeth Not to Be Ashamed

Four pictures of the job: a soldier who does not get entangled with the affairs of this life, an athlete who has to compete lawfully, a farmer with the first right to the crop, and a workman rightly dividing the word of truth. Avoid arguments about words, which only ruin the people listening. The servant of the Lord must not strive, but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient.

All Scripture Is Given by Inspiration

In the last days men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, without natural affection, and having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof. From such turn away. Then the instruction to stay with what he was taught, because he knows who taught him, and because he has known the holy scriptures from a child, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation.

    I Have Finished My Course

Preach the word, be instant in season and out of season, for the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine. Then he says he is now ready to be offered, and the time of his departure is at hand, and writes his own epitaph: I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. And then, in the same breath, small human requests. Bring the cloak I left at Troas, and the books, especially the parchments. Come before winter.
