Fire Fell on Carmel

1 Kings 18

Lyrics
Aaron lifted up his hand toward the people and blessed them before the Lord. The sin offering and the burnt offering were laid upon the altar of God. Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle and came out and blessed the people. And the glory of the Lord appeared to all the congregation that day. The people stood in silence, every eye was fixed on the flame. Then something broke through heaven, and nothing was ever the same. The fire fell, the fire fell, and no man could stand Fire from the Lord came down and consumed the offering Fire from the Lord, the glory filled the ground Every face fell before Him, every knee hit the earth When the fire of the living God Came roaring down Fire from the Lord No altar built by man could hold it Fire from the Lord Heaven broke the sky They saw the holy fire falling They could not stand the weight When the fire of the living God Came roaring down

About the passage

1 Kings 18: The answer by fire, and the return of rain

The return of rain is promised before Elijah appears before Ahab, so Carmel is not a device for forcing the drought to end. The chapter first shows the famine’s pressure through Ahab’s search for grass and Obadiah’s dangerous work of preserving the LORD’s prophets. When Ahab calls Elijah Israel’s troubler, Elijah turns the accusation back on the royal abandonment of the LORD. At Carmel, the people initially say nothing. Baal’s prophets cry, leap, and wound themselves for hours, but no voice answers. Elijah repairs a broken altar with twelve stones, drenches the offering, and prays briefly. Fire consumes not only the sacrifice but the wood, stones, dust, and water. The people finally speak: the LORD is God. Baal’s prophets are killed at Kishon. Only then does repeated watching toward the sea end with a hand-sized cloud, darkened skies, and great rain.
