The Sword Shall Never Depart

2 Samuel 10:1-11:27

[Verse 1] Nahash dies, and David sends comfort to his son Hanun. Hanun shaves half their beards and cuts their garments in humiliation. Ammon hires Syrian forces after realizing it has become hateful to David. Joab calls for courage and leaves the outcome to the LORD. [Pre-Chorus] The warning stood where no one wished to see, And every hidden root became a tree. [Chorus] The Sword Shall Never Depart, let the warning remain, Hidden sin still flowers into pain. The word of the LORD exposed what men concealed, And judgment stood where every heart was revealed. [Verse 2] The Syrian kings make peace and refuse further aid to Ammon. At the return of the year Joab besieges Rabbah while David remains in Jerusalem. David rises from his bed and sees Bathsheba washing from the roof. David sends for Bathsheba, lies with her, and she conceives. [Bridge] Uriah refuses the comfort of home while the ark and soldiers remain in tents. David sends Uriah back carrying the letter that orders his own death. Joab places Uriah near the fiercest fighting, and he is killed. Bathsheba mourns, becomes David's wife, and bears a son, but the deed displeases the LORD. [Final Chorus] The Sword Shall Never Depart, let the warning remain, Hidden sin still flowers into pain. The word of the LORD exposed what men concealed, And judgment stood where every heart stood revealed. [Outro] The warning did not vanish with the dust. The final line remembered judgment, fear, and trust.
