2 Samuel
[Verse 1] David sat within cedar While the ark remained in tent. He told Nathan of the dwelling That his grateful heart had meant. At first the prophet blessed him, But the word returned by night: Had the Lord required a house Through all the years of Israel's flight? [Refrain] Not the house that David builds, But the house that God will raise. Not the throne secured by armies, But established through His grace. A son shall sit after him, And the kingdom shall be known; The Lord promised David An enduring house and throne. [Verse 2] From pasture and the sheepfold David had been called to lead. Enemies were cut before him; Israel received a place and seed. When his days were full and finished, One descended from his line Would build a house unto the name, And fatherhood define. [Prayer] Who am I, O Lord God, And what is all my house, That promise stretches past my life And gathers nations now? Let the word be magnified; Let blessing rest alone. [Final Refrain] Not the house that David builds, But the house that God will raise. Through correction, through the ages, Mercy will not turn away. A covenant beyond one lifetime, An enduring royal throne; The Lord promised David A house that would be known.
