Lyrics · Exodus
The Finger of God
Exodus 7:1-8:19
[Verse 1]
Moses stood as God's appointed voice and Aaron cast the rod,
The serpent swallowed every sign the court magicians brought.
At morning by the Nile the warning met the hardened king,
Then every stream ran red with death and Egypt could not drink.
[Pre-Chorus]
Seven days beside the blood,
Still Pharaoh turned away.
[Chorus]
This is the finger of God,
Dust became life where the sorcerers stopped.
Blood in the river, frogs in every room,
Still the heart of Pharaoh hardened against the coming doom.
[Verse 2]
Frogs climbed through the houses, ovens, beds, and kneading bowls,
Pharaoh begged for mercy, then denied the vow he spoke.
Heaps of dead things filled the land when temporary peace arrived,
Then Aaron struck the dust and lice covered beast and life.
[Bridge]
The magicians reached their limit and confessed what they had seen,
No secret art could answer what had risen from the earth.
Yet knowledge did not soften him, the throne remained unmoved,
And three first blows announced the hand that Egypt still refused.
[Final Chorus]
This is the finger of God,
Dust became life where the sorcerers stopped.
River, house, and skin became a warning from above,
Still the heart of Pharaoh hardened against the living God.
[Outro]
The signs had only started,
And Egypt would learn the name.
