[Driving Verse]
Kneading bowls wrapped in the folds of their clothes,
Silver and gold as the eastern wind rose.
Families gathered, six hundred thousand strong,
A mixed multitude moving along.
Four hundred thirty years ended that night;
Egypt stood emptied before morning light.
[Chorus]
Out of the house of bondage,
Out from the mortar and chain,
Led by a cloud in the daylight,
Led by a fire through the plain.
No road was hidden in darkness,
No camp abandoned alone;
Out of the house of bondage,
The covenant people went home.
[Verse 2]
The shortest road led by Philistia's war,
So God turned the people through wilderness far.
Moses bore Joseph's bones from the land,
Keeping an oath made before Egypt's command.
Succoth behind them, at Etham they stayed;
The cloud stood before them and marked out the way.
[Post-Chorus]
By day it did not depart.
By night it burned over the heart.
[Final Chorus]
Out of the house of bondage,
Out where the wide desert lay,
Led by a cloud in the daylight,
Led by a fire through the gray.
Pharaoh might follow with chariots,
The sea might rise like a wall;
Still from the house of bondage,
The Lord had delivered them all.
