Exodus
[Processional Opening] Three months from Egypt, they camped at the stone; Eagles had carried them out to their own. Called to be treasure, a kingdom of priests, They washed all their garments and waited in peace. Bounds marked the mountain; no hand could draw near; Morning came clothed in thick cloud and in fear. [Refrain] The mountain burned with fire, The trumpet sounded long. Thunder rolled above them, And Sinai answered strong. The people stood at distance, While Moses entered higher; The covenant was spoken Where the mountain burned with fire. [Command Litany] No other gods before the Lord. No carved image to adore. Do not bear the holy name in vain. Remember Sabbath and refrain. Honor father, honor mother. Do not murder one another. Do not break the marriage vow. Do not steal what is not yours now. Do not witness falsely told. Do not covet house or gold. [Bridge] The people begged that Moses hear, For direct thunder filled them with fear. Yet holy fear was meant to restrain The sin that led them back toward chain. [Final Refrain] The mountain burned with fire, But covenant drew near: A people called to holiness, A law made bright and clear.

About the passage

Exodus 19: The delivered people gather before the mountain

Exodus 19 brings Israel to the mountain promised in Moses’ original commission and defines why the rescue from Egypt has been moving in this direction. The LORD begins with what the people have already seen, then calls them to covenant obedience as his treasured possession, a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. Their assent is carried back by Moses, whose mediating role will be publicly confirmed. Preparation occupies two days, but washing and consecration do not erase the mountain’s boundary. On the third morning, thunder, lightning, cloud, trumpet, smoke, fire, and earthquake make the encounter impossible to treat as a quiet private experience. Moses is summoned upward, then immediately sent down to reinforce the limits. The chapter holds nearness and danger together. Israel is brought to meet God, but approach occurs by command, with preparation, positions, and repeated warnings rather than by unrestricted access.

Exodus 20: The God who brought them out tells them how to live together

Exodus 20 gives the covenant’s central commands inside the sound and smoke of Sinai, and it begins by identifying the speaker as the God who has already brought Israel out of bondage. Exclusive allegiance, rejection of worship images, proper use of the divine name, Sabbath rest, honor of parents, and prohibitions concerning killing, adultery, theft, false testimony, and coveting all grow from that setting of completed rescue. The commands reach from worship into households, courts, work schedules, and hidden desire. When the people recoil from the thunder and ask Moses to mediate, he distinguishes panic from the fear meant to restrain sin. The chapter then moves from mountain-scale revelation to altar construction. Earth, unhewn stone, and the manner of approach are regulated. Divine nearness is promised, but neither an image of God nor an impressive altar may be invented as a substitute for the terms the LORD himself gives.
