[Opening Pulse]
Night at the river.
Family crossed.
Jacob stayed backward,
Counting the cost.
No crowd, no weapon,
No road left to flee;
A man came and wrestled
Till dawn touched the trees.
[Hook]
I will not let go till the blessing is spoken,
Though sinew is wounded and old strength is broken.
I will not let go while the dark holds its sway;
Hold fast through the night till the breaking of day.
[Verse]
Dust rose around them, no victor withdrew,
The stranger saw Jacob would struggle it through.
One touch at the hollow, the strong joint gave way;
Power became weakness before coming day.
"What is thy name?" and the answer was plain:
Jacob, the supplanter, the bearer of stain.
[Name Change]
No longer Jacob alone in the land;
Israel, striving with God and with man.
A blessing was given, no face fully shown;
He crossed over Peniel altered and known.
[Final Hook]
I will not let go till the blessing is spoken,
Though walking is changed and the old pride is broken.
The sun rose upon him, and Israel made way,
Limping from mercy at breaking of day.
