[Intro] Thomas was not with them when the risen Lord had come. [Verse 1] We have seen the Lord, the other disciples said. Unless I see the nail-prints in His hands, And put my finger where the iron left its mark, And reach into His side, I will not understand. [Verse 2] Eight days later they were gathered within; Thomas stood among them, every doorway closed. Then Jesus came and stood amid the room: Peace be unto you, He spoke. [Refrain] My Lord and my God! My Lord and my God! [Bridge] Reach hither thy finger; behold My hands. Reach hither thy hand and touch My side. Be not faithless now, but believing. Thomas saw, and all his answer opened wide. [Verse 3] Because thou hast seen Me, thou hast believed; Blessed are they who have not seen and yet believe. Many other signs were done before the disciples, More than the pages of this witness could receive. [Outro] These are written that ye might believe: Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; And believing, ye might have life through His name.

About the passage

John 20: The missing body becomes the presence of the risen Lord

The Book of John lets resurrection dawn through incomplete interpretations rather than instant certainty. Mary sees the stone moved and first assumes the body has been taken. Peter and the beloved disciple inspect the burial cloths, with seeing and believing arriving before a full scriptural understanding. Mary then encounters Jesus without recognizing him until he speaks her name. By evening, the risen Lord stands among disciples behind shut doors, showing the wounds that identify him with the crucified Jesus and sending them as the Father sent him. Thomas, absent from that meeting, demands the same bodily evidence the others received and answers the later encounter with "My Lord and my God." The chapter then turns from eyewitness experience to written testimony. The signs have been selected so later readers may believe without standing in that room and may have life through Jesus' name.
