[Verse 1 - false witness]
They led Jesus to the high priest,
And all the council sought witness against him.
Many bare false witness, but agreed not together;
He held his peace and answered nothing.
[Refrain - the question]
Art thou the Christ,
The Son of the Blessed?
Jesus said, I am;
Ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power.
[Verse 2 - the verdict]
The high priest rent his clothes:
What need have we of further witnesses?
They condemned him to be guilty of death,
And covered his face and struck him.
[Bridge - by the fire]
Thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.
I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest.
Again the maid said, This is one of them;
Again he denied it.
[Breakdown - the third denial]
Thy speech agreeth thereto; thou art a Galilaean.
I know not this man of whom ye speak.
The second time the cock crew,
And Peter remembered the word of Jesus.
[Outro]
Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.
When he thought thereon, he wept.

About the passage
Mark 14: The promised road reaches the night of betrayal
Mark 14 places costly devotion, betrayal, covenant language, confident promises, exhausted failure, and open confession inside one tightening night. An unnamed woman pours out what others call waste while Judas arranges payment for handing Jesus over. At the Passover table, Jesus names the betrayal and gives the coming death its meaning through bread and cup before anyone else can define it for him. He predicts that all will scatter and that Peter will deny him, yet he also promises a meeting in Galilee after he is risen. Gethsemane exposes the distance between promised loyalty and actual strength. Arrest follows a kiss, the disciples flee, witnesses fail to agree, and Jesus answers the direct question about his identity. Outside, Peter does exactly what he had insisted he would never do.
