[Verse 1]
Evening pressed before the Sabbath;
Joseph came from Arimathea,
A counselor who waited for the kingdom,
Boldly asked the body there.
Pilate marveled death had happened,
Heard the centurion's reply,
Then released the crucified One
To the hands that drew Him nigh.
[Refrain]
A stone at the door,
A garden holding silence.
A stone at the door,
Spices wrapped in linen white.
The women marked the place of burial,
Then rested through the holy night.
A stone at the door,
And grief believed it final.
[Verse 2]
Nicodemus came with myrrh and aloes,
Nearly a hundred pounds in weight.
They wound the body with the spices,
Laid Him in a tomb unused.
Mary Magdalene and Mary
Watched where hope was put away.
No anthem rose from the garden;
No disciple understood the day.
[Bridge]
Chief priests remembered resurrection language,
Asked a guard and sealed the stone.
Human power posted watchmen
To make death remain alone.
[Final Refrain]
A stone at the door,
A seal across the sorrow.
A stone at the door,
Yet dawn was moving toward tomorrow.
The tomb received the body,
But could not claim forevermore.
