[Verse 1 - the hidden sorrow] Joseph found the promise carrying a child, And mercy stayed his hand from public shame. While he considered how to put her away, The night received him, troubled and afraid. [Refrain - the angel's word] Joseph, thou son of David, fear not. Take Mary thy wife beneath thy roof. That which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost; She shall bring forth a son. [Verse 2 - the name] Thou shalt call his name JESUS, For he shall save his people from their sins. The prophet's word stood near in the darkness: A virgin shall be with child and bear a son. [Bridge - waking obedience] They shall call his name Emmanuel, God with us, God with us.
