[Verse 1 - the collectors] They that received tribute came to Peter: Doth not your Master pay tribute? He saith, Yes, and entered the house; Jesus spoke before Peter could ask. [Verse 2 - sons are free] Of whom do the kings of the earth take custom, Of their own children, or of strangers? Peter answered, Of strangers. Then are the children free. [Interlude - down to the sea] [Refrain - lest we offend] Go thou to the sea and cast an hook. Take up the fish that first cometh. Open his mouth, and thou shalt find a piece of money; Take that, and give it for me and thee. [Outro] The line went down into the water. One coin answered for me and thee.

About the passage

Matthew 17: Glory on the mountain, weakness below

Glory on the mountain does not cancel the road to suffering. Jesus is transfigured before Peter, James, and John, with Moses and Elijah present, but the heavenly voice interrupts Peter’s proposal and directs the disciples to the beloved Son: “hear ye him.” The command matters because Jesus has already told them what they do not want to hear about the cross. As they descend, the discussion of Elijah turns toward John the Baptist and the rejection that both messenger and Son of man will face. Below the mountain, the disciples’ inability to help a suffering boy exposes the difference between possessing a prior commission and acting in continuing dependence on God. Jesus again announces betrayal, death, and resurrection, while the disciples answer with sorrow. The chapter ends with the temple tribute question, where Jesus explains the freedom of the Son yet chooses to pay rather than create needless offence. Identity and humility remain joined from the mountain to the house.
