Matthew
[Verse 1] Gethsemane under moonlight, Olive branches over stone. Eight remained beside the entrance; Three went farther, not alone. Sorrow pressed His soul to dying; He fell down upon the ground. Sweat like blood marked earnest anguish; Heaven heard without a sound. [Refrain] Not His will, but Thine be done. Not escape before the hour. Let obedience hold the pathway When the flesh has lost its power. Not His will, but Thine be done. The cup stood bitter in the gloom. Three times prayer returned the answer Under trees of coming doom. [Verse 2] Peter, James, and John lay sleeping, Eyes made heavy by the grief. "Watch and pray against temptation," Yet their rest was brief. An angel strengthened Him in anguish; Still the cup did not depart. He chose the road that waited, With a steadfast, yielding heart. [Bridge] The betrayer drew nearer. Torches crossed the hill. The hour had come for sinners' hands; The prayer had settled will. [Final Refrain] Thy will be done, When no lesser road appears. Thy will be done, Through the sorrow and the tears. He rose to meet the darkness; No fear could make Him run. Gethsemane had heard Him: Thy will be done.
