Lyrics · Nehemiah
We Will Not Forsake the House of Our God
Nehemiah 10:1-39
[Verse 1]
Nehemiah the Tirshatha heads the names placed upon the seal.
Levites and their brethren add their names.
The rest of the people separate themselves from the peoples of the lands.
They enter into a curse and oath to walk in Moses' law.
[Pre-Chorus]
The people drew near, but not by careless way,
Holiness ordered every word and day.
[Chorus]
We Will Not Forsake the House of Our God, keep the covenant in view,
Every word and ordered service true.
From altar, ark, and house the witness rose,
The holy God alone the ending knows.
[Verse 2]
Every seventh year will release cultivation and debts.
An annual third of a shekel is charged for temple service.
The fund supports showbread, grain, burnt offerings, Sabbaths, new moons.
Lots establish a rotating wood offering for the altar.
[Bridge]
Firstborn sons, cattle, and flocks are brought according to law.
First dough, offerings, fruit, wine, and oil go to priestly chambers.
Levites receive tithes and bring a tenth of the tithe to the temple.
The covenant closes with the pledge not to forsake the house of God.
[Final Chorus]
We Will Not Forsake the House of Our God, keep the covenant in view,
Every word and ordered service true.
From altar, ark, and house the witness rose,
The holy God alone the witness shows.
[Outro]
The lamps burned low, the ordered service stayed.
The covenant remembered every vow that had been made.
