Speak to the Rock
Numbers 18:1-20:29
[Verse 1]
Priests and Levites bore the holy charge and lived from sacred gifts,
Tithes became the Levites' portion, and a tenth returned to priests.
A red heifer burned outside with cedar, hyssop, scarlet thread,
Its ashes joined with living water cleansed the touch of death.
[Pre-Chorus]
Then Miriam died at Kadesh,
And thirst surrounded Moses once again.
[Chorus]
Speak to the rock before the people,
Let the water show the holiness of God.
But anger struck it twice before them,
And the leaders lost the land they longed to cross.
[Verse 2]
The people gathered loudly, Moses fell before the tent,
Glory came with clear instruction, but frustration changed the act.
Water still came richly, every throat and beast received,
Yet Meribah remembered how God's name was not upheld.
[Bridge]
Edom blocked the highway with an armed and hostile line,
Then Aaron climbed Mount Hor because his years had reached their time.
Moses placed the garments on Eleazar standing near,
And all the camp mourned thirty days when Aaron disappeared.
[Final Chorus]
Speak to the rock before the people,
Let the water show the holiness of God.
The stream still flowed through human failure,
But Moses and Aaron would not cross.
[Outro]
The water ran,
And the mountain kept a grave.
