Lord, remember David and his affliction, How he swore he would not enter rest Till he found a dwelling for the Mighty One, A habitation for the God of Jacob. We heard of it at Ephratah, Found it in the fields of the wood. Let us enter into His tabernacle; Let us worship at His footstool. Arise, O Lord, into Your rest, You and the ark of Your strength. Clothe Your priests with righteousness; Let Your saints shout for joy. The Lord swore truth unto David: "Fruit from your body will sit upon your throne, If your children keep My covenant." His promise will not turn away. The Lord has chosen Zion; He desired it for His dwelling. There He will bless provision, Clothe salvation on the priests, And make David's horn to flourish.

About the passage

Psalms 132: David’s vow is answered by the LORD’s oath

Psalm 132 begins with David’s vow to find a place for the LORD and ends with the LORD declaring Zion the resting place he has chosen. The Book of Psalms deliberately reverses the direction of oath: David swears to God, then God swears concerning David’s descendants and throne. Human devotion matters, but divine choice governs the conclusion. The chapter gathers ark, worship, priests, saints, covenant, kingship, provision, and Zion into one ordered scene. The royal promise includes a stated condition for David’s children, preserving covenant responsibility beside the language of permanence. Zion’s blessing is also strikingly practical. The poor are promised bread, priests salvation, and worshippers joy. A budding horn and prepared lamp preserve the anointed line while enemies receive shame. The sanctuary is therefore not treated as decorative royal architecture. It becomes the place where dwelling, nourishment, worship, and kingship meet under the LORD’s own desire and oath.
