Call Me Mara

Ruth 1:1-7

[Verse 1] Famine emptied Bethlehem in the days the judges ruled, Elimelech crossed to Moab with Naomi and two sons. Foreign fields became their dwelling, then the father passed away, And the widow held her household in a land that was not home. [Pre-Chorus] Ten years turned beneath another sky, Then both sons were gone as well. [Chorus] Call me Mara when I reach the gate, I went away full, but sorrow brings me home. Yet somewhere beyond the bitterness, The fields of Bethlehem are growing grain again. [Verse 2] Mahlon married Ruth of Moab, Chilion took Orpah there, For a season three young households shared the bread of foreign soil. Then two graves stood beside the first, and three women wore their grief, No husband, no surviving son, no answer near enough to hold. [Bridge] Word came down the road from Judah: the LORD had visited with bread, So Naomi rose from mourning and turned her face toward Bethlehem. Ruth and Orpah walked beside her when the first steps left the land, Three widows on a road between the graves and promised harvest. [Final Chorus] Call me Mara when I reach the gate, I went away full, but sorrow brings me home. Yet somewhere beyond the bitterness, The fields of Bethlehem are growing grain again. [Outro] Moab held the graves behind them, Judah held an unseen dawn.
