The Narrow Way

Matthew 7:13-14 · 3:27

The mountain discourse closes by refusing several comfortable substitutions. Hypocrisy is not clear judgment, asking is not manipulation, popularity is not safety, impressive religious works are not the same as being known by Jesus, and hearing is not building. The beam and mote expose a critic who cannot see well enough to perform the surgery he offers.

About the passage

About the passage

Matthew 7: Hearing is not the same as building

The mountain discourse closes by refusing several comfortable substitutions. Hypocrisy is not clear judgment, asking is not manipulation, popularity is not safety, impressive religious works are not the same as being known by Jesus, and hearing is not building. The beam and mote expose a critic who cannot see well enough to perform the surgery he offers. The Father’s goodness grounds asking, seeking, and knocking, then turns outward in the treatment of others. Narrow and broad ways, sheep’s clothing, and fruit insist that appearance requires discernment. Finally, two builders hear the same sayings and meet the same storm, but only one has acted on them. The crowd’s astonishment at Jesus’ authority is genuine, yet the conclusion has already distinguished admiration from obedience.
