About the passage

About the passage

Ezekiel 32: Egypt joins the assembly of the fallen

Ezekiel 32 closes the sequence against Egypt by stripping Pharaoh of every image of exceptional greatness. He is first a river creature whose strength fouls the waters, then prey caught in a net and cast out under darkened heavens. Babylon's sword empties the land until even the rivers run with the stillness of desolation. The second lament changes the scene from Egypt's collapse above ground to its arrival among powers already slain. Asshur, Elam, Meshech, Tubal, Edom, northern princes, and the Zidonians all retain their names and former reputations, but not their ability to escape the grave. Pharaoh's final comfort is severe: he discovers that others who once spread terror share his condition. Company is granted. Rescue is not.
