Bone to His Bone
The hand of the LORD carries Ezekiel, a priest in exile in Babylon, into a valley full of dry bones. God asks him whether these bones can live, and he answers, O Lord GOD, Thou knowest. He prophesies as he is told. There is a noise and a shaking, and bone comes to his bone; sinews, flesh and skin cover them, but there is no breath.

He prophesies to the wind, the breath comes in, and they stand upon their feet, an exceeding great army. These bones are the whole house of Israel, who said our hope is lost, and God promises to open their graves and bring them home.
About the passage
Ezekiel 37: The people who said their hope was gone
Ezekiel 37 gives hopelessness a landscape: a valley crowded with very dry bones. Ezekiel is made to inspect them before he is commanded to speak, and the vision carefully distinguishes assembly from life. Bones join, flesh and skin return, yet the bodies remain breathless until the breath is summoned and the host stands. God then interprets the sign himself as the whole house of Israel, a people saying that their hope is lost and they are cut off. A second sign uses two labeled pieces of wood for Judah and Joseph, making reunion as important as return. The promise gathers, cleanses, and joins the divided people under one king and one shepherd, God's servant David. The chapter's destination goes beyond survival: an everlasting covenant and God's sanctuary in their midst define the restored life.
