The big picture
The beast and the false prophet have been thrown into the lake of fire. John, who is receiving the visions, now sees Satan, God’s enemy, bound for a thousand years. Faithful people reign with Christ, the Lord they served. A final uprising follows Satan’s release and ends in his lasting defeat. Then the dead stand before God. Christians differ over the timing and meaning of the thousand years and the first rising from death. The chapter ends with judgement that no rank or hiding place can escape.

The Dragon Is Bound
An angel comes down from heaven carrying a great chain and the key to the bottomless pit. He seizes the dragon, identified again as the Devil and Satan. The enemy is bound for a thousand years. The angel throws him into the pit, locks it and seals it over him. The stated purpose is to stop him deceiving the nations during that time. Afterward he must be released briefly. The scene limits his power by God’s command, but it has not yet shown his final end.
In everyday life
A network technician seals a damaged relay cabinet after tracing false alerts to its control unit. She disconnects the outgoing line and records the seal number. The wider system stops receiving its misleading messages. A later inspection is already scheduled. Satan is personally bound by heavenly power, not disconnected as faulty equipment.

Revelation 20:3 The seal stops Satan from deceiving the nations for the stated period. His release is also limited, so neither his confinement nor his return lies under his control.

The Faithful Reign with Christ
John sees thrones occupied by people given authority to judge. He also sees those killed for their witness to Jesus, the Christ who rules. They had refused the beast’s worship and its mark. They live and reign with Christ for a thousand years. The remaining dead do not live again until those years end. This is called the first resurrection, a rising from death. Those who share in it are blessed and set apart for God. The second death has no claim on them. They serve God and Christ as priests and share his rule.
In everyday life
A restoration gardener plants a tree in a memorial grove beside a name once erased from local records. Relatives stand nearby as the new sign is uncovered. The public honour answers years of exclusion, though it cannot restore the person’s life. John sees slain witnesses living and reigning with Christ, not receiving a memorial alone.

Revelation 20:6 The promise joins freedom from the second death with service as priests. Their future is described through both safety from final loss and a place near God.

The Final Attack Fails
When the thousand years end, Satan is released. He deceives nations across the earth, named Gog and Magog in this vision. Their vast numbers gather for battle and surround God’s people and the beloved city. Fire from God consumes the attackers. Satan is then thrown into the lake of burning sulphur, where the beast and false prophet already are. His torment continues for ever. Christians differ over how the battle’s details are fulfilled. Its result is clear: the deceiver’s last great gathering ends, and he never regains his power.
In everyday life
A weather crew leader spreads a storm map across the floor of a balloon hangar. A new band of danger surrounds the marked safe zone. Her team checks each report rather than taking comfort in yesterday’s clear skies. They know a quiet interval is not permanent safety. John’s last assault ends through God’s direct action.

Revelation 20:9 The enemy surrounds the faithful, but the account gives them no battle to fight. The attack ends when fire comes from God, not through their military strength.

The Books Are Opened
A great white throne appears, and earth and heaven flee from the one seated there. All the dead stand before God, from the least to the greatest. Books are opened, including the book of life. Each person is judged by recorded deeds. The sea gives up its dead, as do death and the realm of the dead. No place keeps anyone from judgement. Death itself and that realm are thrown into the lake of fire, called the second death. Those absent from the book of life share that fate.
In everyday life
An estate clerk opens boxes in an inventory storeroom while heirs wait beside numbered shelves. Each object must be accounted for, including items kept in distant storage. Family rank does not change what the records show. The clerk’s work still concerns property and fallible records. God judges every life and brings death itself to an end.

Revelation 20:13 The sea and the realm of the dead both surrender those within them. The judgement includes people regardless of where their bodies or remains have been held.
