Hear Thou in Heaven

1 Kings 8:1-66

[Verse 1] Solomon assembles Israel's elders and tribal leaders at Jerusalem. Solomon and the congregation sacrifice sheep and oxen beyond counting. Only the two stone tablets from Horeb remain inside the ark. The priests cannot continue ministering because divine glory fills the temple. [Pre-Chorus] The people drew near, but not by careless way, Holiness ordered every word and day. [Chorus] Hear Thou in Heaven, keep the covenant in view, Every word and ordered service true. From altar, ark, and house the witness rose, The holy God alone the ending knows. [Verse 2] He praises the incomparable covenant-keeping God of Israel. The king confesses that even heaven cannot contain God. He asks that prayers directed toward the temple receive divine attention. Solomon asks restoration when defeated Israel confesses its sin. [Bridge] Famine, pestilence, siege, and personal affliction are placed before God's mercy. Foreigners who come because of God's great name are included. Prayer is requested for Israel in battle and in distant captivity. Solomon rises from kneeling and blesses Israel for fulfilled promises. [Final Chorus] Hear Thou in Heaven, keep the covenant in view, Every word and ordered service true. From altar, ark, and house the witness rose, The holy God alone the witness shows. [Outro] The lamps burned low, the ordered service stayed. The covenant remembered every vow that had been made.
