[Verse 1]
Jezebel swore that the prophet would perish;
Elijah ran south till the wilderness spread.
Under a juniper, emptied and lonely,
He asked that his life might be ended instead.
An angel awoke him with cake on the coals,
Water beside him, then sleep once again.
Strength from that mercy sustained forty journeys
Till Horeb received him in mountain and rain.
[Refrain]
Not in the wind that shattered the mountain,
Not in the earthquake's convulsive choice,
Not in the fire that followed the darkness,
After the fire, a still small voice.
[Verse 2]
"What doest thou here?" came the word in the cavern.
Elijah poured out how the altars were torn,
How prophets were slain, how he alone lingered,
How hunters were seeking his life before morn.
The voice gave a road, not an end in the cave:
Anoint kings and Elisha to carry the plow.
Seven thousand knees had not bowed unto Baal;
He was not alone, though he felt it till now.
[Final Refrain]
Not every answer arrives in the thunder,
Not every calling is shouted by choice.
The weary prophet wrapped face in his mantle
And stepped from the cave at the still small voice.
