[Verse 1]
Jonathan's soul was knit unto David;
Robe, bow, and girdle were laid at his feet.
Saul heard the women sing thousands and tenfold;
Jealousy sharpened where friendship was sweet.
A spear crossed the chamber while David made music;
Marriage became snare, and the palace grew cold.
Yet David behaved with a wisdom God prospered,
And all Israel loved him, both young and old.
[Refrain]
A covenant of brothers,
Stronger than a crown,
Faithful in the wilderness
When spears were hunting down.
A covenant of brothers,
Bound before the Lord;
Jonathan guarded David
From his father's jealous sword.
[Verse 2]
Arrows flew farther than signals required;
A lad gathered weapons, not knowing the pain.
Jonathan kissed him and sent him to hiding;
David went outward through hunger and rain.
Priests gave him bread, and the sword of Goliath;
Caves became houses, distressed men his band.
Saul hunted mountains, but Jonathan found him
And strengthened his heart in the promise at hand.
[Final Refrain]
A covenant of brothers,
No ambition could erase.
Jonathan knew David's kingdom
And still chose loyal grace.
They parted in the woodland,
Their oath before the Lord;
Love stood between the hunted
And the fury of a sword.
