The Passover Was Kept with Great Gladness

2 Chronicles 29:1-32:33

[Verse 1] Hezekiah begins reigning and opens the temple doors in his first year. The king confesses that the fathers shut doors, extinguished lamps. Named Levites arise and cleanse the house over eight days. Hezekiah gathers rulers early and brings sevenfold sin offerings. [Pre-Chorus] The long night ended, fear released its hold, And every household heard the story told. [Chorus] The Passover Was Kept with Great Gladness, let the feast begin, Joy returned where grief and fear had been. The people sang because the word held true, And every generation learned what God could do. [Verse 2] Couriers invite Israel and Judah to keep Passover in the second month. Many northern hearers mock, but some humble themselves and come. A very great congregation removes false altars from Jerusalem. Passover joy extends through a second seven-day feast. [Bridge] Sennacherib invades, and Hezekiah stops outer waters and strengthens Jerusalem's defenses. Assyrian servants and letters blaspheme God and terrify the city. Hezekiah and Isaiah pray, and an angel destroys the enemy's mighty men and leaders. After sickness, sign, pride, humbling, wealth, and testing by Babylonian envoys, Hezekiah dies in honor. [Final Chorus] The Passover Was Kept with Great Gladness, let the feast begin, Joy returned where grief and fear had been. The people sang because the word held true, And every generation learned what mercy still could do. [Outro] The feast became a memory to keep. Joy learned the name of those who once would weep.
