The people kept silence as ordered and heard; The king rent his clothes at the blasphemous word. [Refrain] Spread the letter before the Lord, Lay the proud threat where mercy is sought. Thrones may boast of the cities they burned, But the living God is not wood that is wrought. [Verse 2] Hezekiah entered the house in his grief, Sent men to Isaiah and pleaded relief. The prophet returned what the Lord had decreed: The king of Assyria would fail in his greed. Sennacherib wrote and renewed every claim; Hezekiah unfolded the letter by name.
