[Verse 1]
Rabshakeh shouted beside the fuller's field,
Mocked every nation whose gods had been stilled.
"Let not Hezekiah persuade you to trust;
No hand has delivered from Assyria's dust."
The people kept silence as ordered and heard;
The king rent his clothes at the blasphemous word.
[Refrain]
Spread the letter before the Lord,
Lay the proud threat where mercy is sought.
Thrones may boast of the cities they burned,
But the living God is not wood that is wrought.
[Verse 2]
Hezekiah entered the house in his grief,
Sent men to Isaiah and pleaded relief.
The prophet returned what the Lord had decreed:
The king of Assyria would fail in his greed.
Sennacherib wrote and renewed every claim;
Hezekiah unfolded the letter by name.
[Chorus]
The angel in the night
Passed through Assyria's host.
Morning found a hundred eighty-five thousand
Silent beneath their boast.
No arrow entered Jerusalem,
No shield came near the wall;
The angel in the night
Answered the proudest call.
[Final Verse]
Sennacherib journeyed to Nineveh home;
His sons struck him down by the altar of stone.
The city stood guarded, the remnant drew breath;
One night overturned an empire's threat.
