Lyrics · 2 Samuel
The King Came Again to Jordan
2 Samuel 19:9-20:26
[Verse 1]
Israel's tribes debate why the king remains in exile after defeating their enemies.
Amasa is promised command of the army in Joab's place.
Shimei meets the king at Jordan with a thousand Benjaminites.
Abishai demands judgment, but David swears Shimei will not die that day.
[Pre-Chorus]
The stones lay broken, every gate was burned,
But prayer became the place where courage turned.
[Chorus]
The King Came Again to Jordan, raise the broken stones,
Call the scattered families to their homes.
The work grew strong through prayer, truth, and hand,
And ruined gates remembered how to stand.
[Verse 2]
Aged Barzillai escorts David over Jordan after sustaining him in exile.
Barzillai declines palace life and sends Chimham instead.
Israel and Judah quarrel over their shares in returning the king.
David confines the ten concubines left in Jerusalem for the remainder of their lives.
[Bridge]
Joab meets Amasa, seizes him by the beard.
The pursuit follows Sheba northward to Abel of Beth-maachah.
A wise woman negotiates with Joab to preserve the peaceful city.
Sheba's head is thrown over the wall, the rebellion ends.
[Final Chorus]
The King Came Again to Jordan, raise the broken stones,
Call the scattered families to their homes.
The work grew strong through prayer, truth, and hand,
And ruined gates remembered where to stand.
[Outro]
The wall stood firm, but hearts still needed care.
The work was stone and covenant and prayer.
