[Verse 1] Stephen moved in faith and power, Wonders followed through the street. False men stirred the synagogue, But wisdom made their charges weak. They seized him, set him before council, Twisted words against the place. All who sat and looked upon him Saw an angel in his face. [Refrain] A face like an angel, A witness without fear. The God of glory led the fathers; The Righteous One drew near. A face like an angel, While stones were gathering there. Truth did not soften for the council, And heaven opened to his prayer. [Verse 2] He told of Abraham and Joseph, Moses, wilderness, and law; How Israel resisted prophets And the temple could not draw God into houses built by mortals. They had killed the Just One too. The hearers gnashed; Stephen looked upward, Saw the glory breaking through. [Chorus] The Son of Man stood at God's right hand. The council stopped its ears. They dragged him out and laid their garments At a young man's feet named Saul. Stones struck down the faithful witness; He prayed forgiveness through the fall. [Final Refrain] A face like an angel Disappeared beneath the dust, But scattered saints preached everywhere; The word outran the thrust.
