Where the songs go in Judges
The 17 songs here set 6 of the 6 movements in Judges to music: “The Conquest Stalls” (Judges 1–3), “A Prophetess and a Tent Peg” (Judges 4–5), “Three Hundred Men and Some Broken Pitchers” (Judges 6–8), “A Millstone Dropped from a Tower” (Judges 9–12), “A Vow, a Riddle, and a Haircut” (Judges 13–16) and “No King in Israel” (Judges 17–21).
The Conquest Stalls (Judges 1–3). Tribe after tribe fails to drive out the people already in the land, and an angel tells them what is left behind will be thorns in their sides.
A Millstone Dropped from a Tower (Judges 9–12). Abimelech kills seventy brothers on one stone to make himself king, and the youngest survivor shouts a fable about trees from a hilltop.
No King in Israel (Judges 17–21). A man sets up his own shrine and hires a Levite as a private priest; a whole tribe steals both on its way north.
