[Verse 1]
Babylon entered with vessels from Zion,
Young men were chosen for language and lore.
Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah
Received foreign names in the conqueror's court.
The king set a table of meat and of wine,
A daily provision to reshape the mind.
[Refrain]
Daniel purposed within his heart
Not to defile what was set apart.
Ten days of pulse and water alone;
Faithfulness lived under Babylon's throne.
[Verse 2]
The prince feared danger if faces grew pale,
But Daniel requested a measurable trial.
After ten mornings their countenances shone
Fairer and fuller than all who had known
The meat of the king. So the portion was spared;
Vegetables answered where conscience had dared.
[Chorus]
Ten times better in wisdom and learning,
Ten times clearer when questions were brought.
Not from the table of Babylon's ruler,
But from the God who gave knowledge and thought.
Dreams and visions opened to Daniel;
Years would pass, kingdoms would alter.
Ten times better,
Faith at the table stood.
[Final Refrain]
New names could not erase them.
New courts could not command
The inward line of covenant
They carried to the land.
