[Intro] Five kings knot their banners round Gibeon. A runner breaks for Gilgal before night. "Slack not thy hand from thy servants; Come quickly. Save us. Help." [Verse 1] All night the boots of the mighty keep climbing. At dawn the coalition finds Joshua near. The LORD has spoken: none shall stand before thee. Confusion takes the ranks that came in fear. They flee by Beth-horon; the sky hurls stone, And heaven strikes more than the swords below. [Chorus] Sun, stand still upon Gibeon. Moon, hold over Ajalon. Give the people light until the work is finished; The LORD is fighting for Israel. [Instrumental - driving pulse] [Verse 2] Five crowns vanish into one cave at Makkedah. Roll rock across the mouth; keep pursuit alive. When the armies turn, bring out the hidden rulers; Captains set their feet where royal necks had pride. At evening they hang, at evening they come down; The cave that hid their fear is sealed around them. [Bridge] Makkedah. Libnah. Lachish. Gezer breaks beside its aid. Eglon. Hebron. Debir. Hill and vale receive the blade. Southland, springs, and desert, One campaign beneath one hand. [Chorus - final] Sun, stand still upon Gibeon. Moon, hold over Ajalon. Never was a day so answered to a man's voice; The LORD fought for Israel. [Outro] The light completes its circuit. Joshua returns to Gilgal.

About the passage

Joshua 10: The battle for the city Israel had sworn to spare

The treaty with Gibeon immediately becomes costly when five Amorite kings attack the city for making peace with Israel. Joshua marches through the night to relieve the ally Israel had sworn to spare, and the campaign expands from surprise attack to hailstones and the extraordinary delay of sunset. The account repeatedly insists that the LORD fights for Israel even while Joshua's army marches, pursues, traps, and attacks. Five kings hide in a cave that becomes first a prison and later their tomb, while successive city captures push the southern campaign across the region. The repeated formulas create a sweeping victory record, but small differences remain important: not every city falls in exactly the same way, and defeating Gezer's king does not equal capturing Gezer itself. The chapter closes by gathering the campaign into one explanation and one return. The LORD fought for Israel, and Joshua brings the army back to Gilgal.
