[Verse 1]
Two walked toward Emmaus,
Hope buried with the day.
A stranger joined their questions
And opened Moses on the way.
Prophets burned with hidden meaning;
At the table bread was blessed.
Their eyes were opened; He vanished,
And fire remained within their breast.
[Refrain]
Did not the heart burn
While Scripture opened wide?
Did not the road grow holy
With the risen One beside?
They rose before the darkness,
Returned where fear had spread.
The Lord had truly risen;
The living stood from dead.
[Verse 2]
Doors were shut in Jerusalem;
Suddenly He stood among.
"Peace be unto you" met terror,
Hands and side made witness strong.
He ate before their wondering,
Opened understanding clear:
The Christ must suffer, rise the third day;
Repentance would be preached from here.
[Bridge - Thomas]
Thomas missed the first appearing,
Would not trust their gathered word.
Eight days later wounds confronted
The doubt that he had firmly stirred.
"My Lord and my God," he answered;
Faith bent low before the scars.
[Final Chorus]
Peace be unto you,
Witnesses from near to far.
Blessed are those who have not seen
Yet trust the testimony's star.
