About the passage
Luke 4: The announced mission meets resistance
The sonship announced from heaven is tested in the wilderness before Jesus publicly defines his mission in Nazareth. The devil offers shortcuts involving bread, dominion, and a dramatic proof of protection; Jesus answers from Israel's own wilderness Scripture and refuses to make sonship serve the tempter's terms. Back in Galilee, Isaiah's promise of good news, release, sight, and liberty becomes a present announcement: "This day" it is fulfilled. Nazareth initially marvels, then turns violent when Jesus cites mercy reaching outsiders and refuses to make hometown familiarity a claim on prophetic benefit. Capernaum responds differently, astonished at a word that carries authority over both teaching and unclean spirits. Healings move from synagogue to household to crowds, yet even enthusiastic demand cannot confine the mission to one city. The chapter repeatedly tests attempts to control Jesus, whether by satanic challenge, local entitlement, hostile force, demonic testimony, or grateful crowds. He keeps moving according to the purpose for which he says he was sent.
